Description

South Eastern & Chatham Railway oak single fusee drop dial wall clock, from circa 1900. The 12inch dial has been re-written in later service life ‘B.R.(S). 1149.S.E’ and signed ‘John Walker, 1 South Molton St, London’, surrounded by a cast brass bezel. Originally located at Folkestone Pier Telegraph Office, later Folkestone Harbour No.3 platform and finally Gosport platform clock. The solid Oak back box has a delicate hand cut dovetail construction and retains a rich golden appearance with original French Polish finish. The side door carries an original SE&CR number plate, stamped ‘1149’ and the bottom door retains the original brass turn lock. The back of the box is also additionally stamped ‘1149 SE’ along with traces of paint from in-service decoration. The quality chain driven movement is cleanly branded on the back plate with ‘G&B’ and ‘SECRy’ stamped within oval cartouches. The 20inches high pendulum is also stamped ‘1149’ and to complete the impressive collection of identification markings the original clock key is stamped ‘SE&CR’, an extremely scarce detail. From the personal collection of Ian Lyman, this wonderful clock runs well and is probably the finest quality railway clock we have seen.
